St Antonio Castle The 517 Year Old Slave Castle In Ghana

About St Antonio Castle

St. Antonio Castle was constructed by the Portuguese in the early 16th century, making it one of the oldest European forts in sub-Saharan Africa, Built on a rocky promontory near the mouth of the Ankobra River, it was the second Portuguese fort built on the Gold Coast, after St. George's Castle (Elmina Castle).  Fort Saint Anthony was used as a trading post for gold, ivory, and slaves. It was also an important military base, and it was involved in several battles between the Portuguese, Dutch, and British.  The fort was captured by the Dutch in 1642 and subsequently made part of the Dutch Gold Coast. The Dutch expanded the fort before they turned it over, with the rest of their colony, to the British in 1872, The fort was abandoned by the British in the late 19th century,  The fort is now the property of the Ghanaian state and is open to the public, it was rehabilitated in the 1950s and is now a popular tourist destination St. Anthonio Castle stands as a tangible reminder of the complex history of European colonization and trade in West Africa and serves as an important cultural and educational site in Ghana The fort was originally built as a trading post and was part of the network of forts established by European powers along the West African coast for trade and defense. The castle is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea in Axim, a town known for its historical significance and connection to the European colonial presence in West Africa

A view Of St Antonio Castle

St Antonio castle is one of the oldest castles in Ghana and in West Africa after Elmina castle, the castle is 506 years old and was first occupied by the Portuguese before the British took over, initially, the Portuguese settled there mainly for business until the British took over the castle and turned it into a slave castle. it wasn't as emotional as the time I visited the Elmina castle but we got to learn a thing or two about the castle and the thing that took place there when both the Portuguese and the British stayed there, we also learned about how slavery was abolished but the Ashantis continued slavery for another 65 years
